Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography, 1945-1982
01.21.12 - 05.27.12
ANNENBERG WING http://www.psmuseum.org/
As part of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945-1980 regional initiative, Backyard Oasis examines swimming pools in photographs from 1945 to 1982 as visual analogs of the ideals and expectations associated with Southern California. These images of individual water-based environs in the arid landscape are an integral part of the region’s identity, a microcosm of the hopes and disillusionments of the country’s post-World War II ethos. As a private setting, the backyard pool became a stage for sub-culture rituals and clandestine desires. As a medium, photography became the primary vehicle for embodying the polar emotions of consumer optimism and Cold War fears. Crossing the boundaries of popular and high culture, commercial merchandising, journalistic reporting, and vernacular memorabilia, photography conveyed the developing ideologies of the period. As such, its visual language forms a network of discursive topics that open onto each other, offering a rich study of physical and cultural geography. For the first time, this exhibition, its catalogue, and attendant programs trace the integrated histories of photography and the iconography of the swimming pool, bringing new light to aspects of this complex interaction.
This exhibition includes over 70 oil paintings by Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) ranging in date from 1876-1918. Organized into two themes, the exhibition includes 40 American and Western landscapes paintings, 20 daylight Palm Springs area desert paintings along with a selection of larger “studio” paintings. The paintings will be loaned from the artist’s estate and from the collections of his heirs, private collections and the Sullivan Goss Gallery. This will be the first Museum venue of a traveling exhibition of the artist’s nocturne paintings Collecting Moonlight: the Night Paintings of Lockwood de Forest. A brochure will be produced by Palm Springs Art Museum to accompany this exhibition.

Festival films include Off the Rez, a documentary of a young Native American woman and her pursuit of a college basketball career; and The Strength of Water, the story of ten-year-old twins in a Maori community, that is both visually and emotionally powerful. In response to their popularity in years past, there will be two programs of short films.

Engaging, entertaining, and enlightening feature films, documentaries, and short films from some of today's premier Native American and indigenous filmmakers will be followed by informative Q&A sessions.
About Agua Caliente Cultural Museum
In 1991, a modest museum of less than 1,600 square feet was founded to collect and preserve stories and artifacts of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and share them with local residents and visitors alike. Through the intervening years, Museum programming has expanded to serve a broader population. Education activities have dramatically increased and, by necessity, have moved beyond Museum walls into the greater desert community and the collection and archiving of important holdings has been diligent. Today, Museum programming provides a thriving resource for Native and non-Native people and a dynamic forum for permanent residents and visitors of all ages.
Museum exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural festivals serve over 18,000 adults and children each year. These activities take place at the Museum and across the Coachella Valley.
For teachers, students, artists, scholars, and collectors the Museum's holdings provide unique research and archival resources -- from recordings of the last tribal haunik (ceremonial singer) to the documentation of ongoing challenges made to tribal land and water rights. Free online resources are available on the Museum Web site at www.accmuseum.org.
Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit institution. In keeping with its mission, the Museum inspires people to learn about the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and other Native cultures through exhibitions, collections, research, and educational programs.
In recognition of its role as a regional and national resource, Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is the first Native American museum to be part of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. The association with Smithsonian Institution provides opportunities for a mutual sharing of resources in collections, scholarship, programming, and technical expertise, and entitles the Museum to bring world-acclaimed Smithsonian exhibitions to the Coachella Valley.
Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is located at 219 South Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs. The Museum is open September through May -- Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Sunday, noon to 5:00 pm; June through August -- Friday and Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Sunday, noon to 5:00 pm. A Little Night Music http://www.palmcanyontheatre.org
A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, it involves the romantic lives of several couples. Its title is a literal English translation of the German name for Mozart's Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, Eine kleine Nachtmusik. The musical includes the popular song "Send in the Clowns". Since its original 1973 Broadway production, the musical has enjoyed professional productions in the West End, by opera companies, in a 2009 Broadway revival, and elsewhere, and it is a popular choice for regional groups. It was adapted for film in 1977, with Harold Prince directing and Elizabeth Taylor, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down and Diana Rigg starring.
