Indian Canyons- Long before Palm Springs was a city, the Cahuilla Indians settled in the canyons at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains. They grew melons, squash, beans, and corn and gathered wild plants and seeds for shelter, medicine, food, and baskets. Evidence of their lives, particularly in petroglyphs and hollows carved into rock formations for food preparation, can be found in the Indian Canyons. For an inspiring hike among this rugged terrain, where rocks have been worn smooth by rushing snowmelt and indigenous palms have been allowed to naturally collect skirts of dried fronds, visit the canyons at the end of South Palm Canyon Drive Palm Springs.
